Brutus lies awake in bed, staring at the ceiling, his mind racing from the day’s events. The crude drawings on every wall around the town. Cassius confronting him in the Senate house about Caesar. Caesar asking him to go away to Macedonia. The way Caesar looked at him...almost as if he couldn't trust him anymore. That was what had upset him the most. Caesar was as a father to him and he'd always had the best interests of the Republic at heart. But now Brutus was starting to have doubts. His heart was telling him that Caesar was still loyal to the Republic, but his mind was telling him that Caesar was indeed a tyrant...and that he had to die.

Brutus sighed heavily as he threw the covers from his body, climbed out of bed, and padded silently through the house. He came to a stop in front of a wall full of masks, the faces of his ancestors staring back of him, each lit by the orange flame of a single candle. He searched through the faces, his eyes finally resting on one certain mask...his father's. He stared at it for a moment, remembering. Brutus drew in a deep breath before stepping back and falling to his knees. He raised his arms towards the staring faces.

"Ancestors of the Junii, I beg of you...tell me...is killing Caesar the right thing to do?"

He waited. Nothing. He dropped his arms and shook his head. As he stood, he caught sight of movement out of the corner of his eye. The flame behind his fathers mask was flickering in an invisible breeze. A second flame began flickering, followed by another and then another until every one on the wall in front of him was flickering. And as quickly as it started, it stopped. Brutus smiled.

He slept soundly that night, for the first time in weeks.

I like your use of the ancestral masks as a way of helping Brutus to his decision.
